Therapy FAQ

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if it’s your first time. You might have questions about how it works, what to expect, or whether it’s right for you. This FAQ is designed to answer some of the most common questions I hear from new clients, so you can feel more confident and informed as you consider taking this important step toward your mental health and well-being.

1. What is therapy, and what does a therapist do?
Therapy is a collaborative process where you work with a trained professional to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Therapists provide support, guidance, and tools to help you better understand yourself, manage challenges, and create positive changes in your life. It’s a safe, confidential space designed to empower you on your personal journey.

2. What can I expect in my first therapy session?
During our first session, we’ll get to know each other and discuss what brought you to therapy. This is a chance to share your goals, ask questions, and get comfortable with the process. I’ll explain how I work and we’ll begin building a plan tailored to your needs.

3. How long does therapy usually take?
Therapy is a personal journey, so the length varies depending on your goals and needs. Some people notice changes in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll regularly check in to adjust the pace and focus as needed.

4. Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes! I provide virtual therapy across North Carolina, making it easier for you to access support from the comfort and privacy of your own space.

5. What if I don’t know exactly what to work on?
That’s completely okay. Many clients come unsure of what they want to focus on. Together, we’ll explore your experiences, strengths, and challenges to clarify what feels most important to you.

6. How do you maintain confidentiality?
Your privacy is a top priority. Everything you share is confidential and protected by law, with very few exceptions (like imminent harm to yourself or others). I’ll explain confidentiality details at the start so you feel safe and informed.

7. What types of therapy approaches do you use?
I integrate evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and somatic techniques. I tailor these methods to fit your unique needs and goals.

8. How do I get started?
Getting started is easy! You can reach out via phone or email to schedule a free consultation. From there, we’ll find a time that works and begin your journey toward greater well-being.
